Your Sustainable garden is cheaper than you think.

A raised bed garden is the easiest way to start your kitchen garden: 4 bricks, 1 bag of soil and 3-4 seedlings later, and you’re one step closer to striking off another thing off your grocery list.

As the saying goes, It always seems hard until it’s done. Shifting old habits and adopting new ones is no different. Living more responsibly is a simple mantra that can start with you… 4 blocks, 1 bag of soil and 3 seedlings. That’s it! I started my kitchen garden with ambition; 17 cement blocks worth of ambition. And as time went by, filling a space 17 blocks wide seemed daunting, and what started as a simple project was put on an unintentional hiatus. Suddenly, days turned weeks and matured into months of waiting, and I was 3-months behind on something that was supposed to take one weekend.

One day I took 3 blocks from my lineup and made a smaller grow box within the larger one. I was ready to start, no matter how small that start might be. This move followed a trip to my favourite plant nursery for a few seedlings and bags of soil to fit my small space. In less than half an hour, I turned my barren backyard space into a starter kitchen garden filled with cucumbers, cabbage, eggplants and one adorable lettuce, all protected by a few marigolds.

The cost of starting your sustainable garden?

Easier, more accessible and most importantly, cheaper than you think!

The above price list is the costs for nursery supplies used to execute this kitchen garden from the People's Agri Centre Limited (Tumpuna Road, Arima) and my neighbourhood hardware (for cement blocks). After careful search from nearby plant nurseries, People's Agri has become one of my favourites, with some of the most affordable prices, healthy seedlings and friendly customer service to help you kickstart your kitchen garden journey without breaking bank.

I’m pretty excited at this start. It’s not as grand as I expected, but it’s more than I could have anticipated. There's so much that can fit in a small space, and I can’t wait to see how many different vegetables can fill my 17 block lineup.
